Tropical Lavender Shell Romper: Free Crochet Pattern

Introduction

This little romper is made for busy toddlers who live in warm weather and for the grown-ups who dress them. It is crocheted in soft bamboo cotton, so the fabric feels cool, breathable, and gentle against the skin. The body is a simple straight tube worked in shell stitch, then split into two short legs, with two tiny sleeves sewn in at the shoulders. Forest green and rust stripes give it a tropical feel, and a small lavender sprig at the chest adds a sweet finishing touch. If you can single and double crochet, you can make this romper.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Sport weight (CYC 2), 50% bamboo / 50% cotton, 150 yd (137 m) per 50 g skein.
    • Color A (forest green): 2 skeins (about 300 yd / 274 m)
    • Color B (rust): 1 skein (about 150 yd / 137 m)
    • Color C (lavender): small amount (about 20 yd / 18 m)
  • Hook: 3.5 mm (US E/4)
  • Notions: stitch markers, tapestry needle, scissors, tape measure
  • Finished size: to fit 18–24 months — chest 20" (51 cm), length 16" (41 cm), sleeve length 3" (7.5 cm)

Abbreviations

  • ch — chain: make a loop of yarn and pull it through the loop on your hook.
  • sl st — slip stitch: insert hook, yarn over, pull through both the stitch and the loop on your hook.
  • sc — single crochet: insert hook, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through both loops.
  • dc — double crochet: yarn over, insert hook, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull through the last 2 loops.
  • sk — skip: miss the stated number of stitches without working into them.
  • rep — repeat: work the instruction again the stated number of times.
  • RS — right side: the outside, public face of the fabric.
  • shell — a group of 3 dc worked into the same stitch.

Gauge

20 sts and 10 rows in shell pattern = 4" (10 cm). Work a small swatch in the round and measure the shell pattern before you begin; if you have more stitches than this, go up a hook size, and if you have fewer, go down.

Tips Before You Start

  • When you join the starting chain into a ring, check carefully that it is not twisted — a twist here cannot be fixed later.
  • Each round of the body begins by slipping to the center dc of the first shell, so the shells stack neatly on top of each other. Keep your join loose so the fabric does not pucker.
  • Change colors at the end of a round by finishing the join with the new color, so the stripe line stays clean.
  • Try the tube on the child (or measure against a romper that fits) before dividing for the legs — the split should sit at the natural crotch line.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Body (Color A)

Set-up: With A, ch 102, join with sl st to form a ring, being careful not to twist.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around, join with sl st to first sc (102 sc).

Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in same st, sk 2 sc, *3 dc in next sc, sk 2 sc; rep from * around, join with sl st to top of ch-3 (34 shells).

Rnd 3: Sl st to center dc of first shell, ch 3, 2 dc in same st, *3 dc in center dc of next shell; rep from * around, join (34 shells).

Rnd 4: Rep Rnd 3 (34 shells).

With RS facing, count 17 shells for the front and 17 shells for the back. Place a marker at center front and center back. Join A at center back.

Row 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in same st, (3 dc in center dc of next shell) 16 times, turn (17 shells).

Row 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in same st, (3 dc in center dc of next shell) 16 times, turn (17 shells).

Rows 3–8: Rep Row 2 (17 shells each row; 8 rows total for the leg).

Fasten off. There is no gap at center front. Work the second leg over the remaining 17 shells in the same manner, then fasten off.

Sleeves (make 2, Color A)

Set-up: With A, ch 32, join with sl st to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around, join (32 sc).

Edging (Color A)

Neck opening: Join A at center back of neck opening. Ch 1, sc evenly around the neck opening, join with sl st. Fasten off.

Sleeve cuffs (both): Join A at the cuff edge. Ch 1, sc evenly around the cuff, join with sl st. Fasten off. Repeat for the second sleeve.

Lavender Sprig Appliqué (Color C)

Row 1: With C, ch 12, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (11 sc).

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Assembly and Finishing

Sew the sleeve openings to the body armholes with the tapestry needle and Color A, aligning the center of each sleeve with the shoulder seam. Sew the lavender sprig flat to the center front chest, about 1" (2.5 cm) below the neckline, using the photo as a guide. Weave in all ends on the wrong side, working them through a few stitches in more than one direction so they stay put. Block lightly: mist the romper, smooth it flat to the finished measurements (chest 20", length 16"), and let it dry away from direct heat. Bamboo cotton relaxes nicely with a light block, so the shells open up and the stripes sit straight.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Change the palette: Swap the rust stripes for mustard or coral, or work the whole body in one color and keep only the lavender appliqué for contrast.
  • Add length: For a longer fit, work extra 2-round stripe repeats in the body before dividing for the legs, keeping the shell count at 34.
  • Make the sprig a flower: Instead of the chain appliqué, work a small 5-petal flower in C and sew it at the chest for a different tropical touch.
