Halloween Moon Hex Earflap Hat - Free Crochet Pattern

AppPairing: Palette Harmonies & Texture Combinations • October 28, 2026

Introduction

This Halloween Moon Hex Earflap Hat is a fun, slightly space-age take on a cold-weather classic. It's built from seven simple hexagon motifs joined into a domed crown, then finished with tapered earflaps, a silver edging, braided ties, and a pale silver moon appliqué near the crown. The worsted weight tweed wool gives it a soft, slightly rustic texture that looks great in ice blue and silver. It's written for crocheters who are comfortable with basic stitches and ready to try joining motifs, and it makes a cozy, quirky hat for Halloween or any chilly day.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Worsted weight tweed wool (approx. 200–220 yds per 100 g skein). Color A (ice blue): 150 yds. Color B (silver): 100 yds. Color C (pale silver): 20 yds.

  • Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch marker, scissors, measuring tape.
  • Finished size: Fits head circumference 22–24 in (56–61 cm); height 8.5 in (21.5 cm) from crown to brim.

Gauge

One hexagon motif measures 3.5 in (9 cm) across the flats after blocking. Work one motif and measure across the flat sides to check your gauge before starting the full hat.

Tips Before You Start

  • Make all seven hexagons first and block them lightly so they lie flat and match in size before joining.
  • Keep your joining seams on the inside; try the ring on as you go to check the fit around the head.
  • Count stitches at the end of each earflap row — the taper depends on exact counts.
  • Leave the 12-in tails on the hexagons; they make seaming much easier.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Hexagon Motif (make 7: 4 in A, 3 in B)

With A or B, ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring.

R1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in ring, [ch 2, 3 dc in ring] 5 times, ch 2, join with sl st to top of ch-3. (6 groups of 3 dc, 6 ch-2 sps)

R2: Ch 3, dc in next 2 dc, *[2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in next ch-2 sp, dc in next 3 dc; rep from * around, join with sl st to top of ch-3. (6 groups of 7 dc, 6 ch-2 sps)

R3: Ch 3, dc in next 4 dc, *[2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in next ch-2 sp, dc in next 7 dc; rep from * around, join with sl st to top of ch-3. (6 groups of 11 dc, 6 ch-2 sps)

Fasten off, leaving a 12-in tail for seaming.

Crown Assembly

Join 6 hexagons in a ring: with right sides facing, whipstitch or sc join the edges of adjacent hexagons along one flat side, forming a circle. Join the first and last hexagon to close the ring.

Join the 7th hexagon to the top of the ring: align one flat side of the 7th hexagon with one flat side of each of the 6 hexagons in the ring, and whipstitch or sc join in place, closing the crown.

Earflaps (make 2, with A)

Row 1: With A, join yarn at the bottom edge of the hat at a point centered over the ear, ch 1, sc 9 evenly across one flat side of a hexagon. Turn. (9 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across. Turn. (9 sc)

Row 3: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 5 sc, sc2tog. Turn. (7 sc)

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each sc across. Turn. (7 sc)

Row 5: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 3 sc, sc2tog. Turn. (5 sc)

Row 6: Ch 1, sc in each sc across. Turn. (5 sc)

Row 7: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next sc, sc2tog. Turn. (3 sc)

Row 8: Ch 1, sc in each sc across. Turn. (3 sc)

Row 9: Ch 1, sc3tog. (1 sc)

Fasten off. Repeat for the second earflap on the opposite side.

Edging

Join B at the back of the hat, ch 1, sc evenly around the entire bottom edge of the hat and both earflaps, join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off.

Moon Appliqué (with C)

R1: MR 6 sc. (6 sc)

R2: Inc in each st around. (12 sc)

R3: [Sc, inc] x6. (18 sc)

R4: [2 sc, inc] x6. (24 sc)

Fasten off, leaving an 8-in tail. Sew the moon appliqué to the front side of the hat, positioning it on one of the hexagons near the crown.

Braided Ties (make 2)

Cut 6 strands of A and 3 strands of B, each 30 in long. Fold in half, pull the loop through the bottom tip of an earflap, thread the ends through the loop, and tighten. Braid to the desired length, knot the end, and trim evenly. Repeat for the second earflap.

Assembly and Finishing

Weave in all ends on the wrong side of the hat. Check that all motif joins are secure and that the earflaps sit evenly over the ears. Block the hat to measurements: mist lightly, shape over a round form or bowl, and let it dry completely. Trim the braided ties evenly at the ends.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Swap the moon for a small star or bat appliqué for a different Halloween look.
  • Use a contrasting color for the edging and ties to make the hexagon joins pop.
  • For a warmer hat, add a second sc round to the edging or line the inside with soft fleece.
