Fisherman Rib Colorblock Ankle Socks Free Knit Pattern

Introduction

These ankle socks are made for the men in your life who appreciate a clean, mid-century-modern look with their handknits. The leg pairs a soft fisherman rib texture with a wide silver colorblock band set against ice blue, while the foot stays smooth and simple in plain stockinette. Worked cuff-down in fingering weight wool with a classic heel flap and gusset, they are a satisfying, wearable project that fits comfortably inside everyday shoes. The finished sock feels snug, springy, and warm, with just enough visual interest in the leg to keep the knitting fun.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Fingering weight wool, 100% wool, 400 yards (366 m) per 100 g skein.
    • MC (Ice Blue): 1 skein, approx. 200 yards (183 m)
    • CC (Silver): 1 skein, approx. 100 yards (91 m)
  • Needles: 2.25 mm (US 1) circular needle, 80 cm (32 in) long, for magic loop, or a set of 5 double-pointed needles in the same size.
  • Notions: Stitch markers, a tapestry needle for grafting and weaving in ends, waste yarn or a spare circular needle for holding instep stitches, and a tape measure.
  • Finished size: Men's medium — foot circumference 8.5 inches (21.5 cm), leg length 5 inches (12.5 cm), foot length adjustable.

Abbreviations

  • CO — cast on.
  • k — knit.
  • p — purl.
  • sl1 — slip one stitch purlwise with the yarn held to the wrong side.
  • ssk — slip, slip, knit: slip two stitches knitwise one at a time, then knit them together through the back loops (a left-leaning decrease).
  • k2tog — knit two stitches together (a right-leaning decrease).
  • p2tog — purl two stitches together.
  • rnd(s) — round(s).
  • st(s) — stitch(es).
  • MC — main color (Ice Blue).
  • CC — contrast color (Silver).
  • WS / RS — wrong side / right side.

Gauge

32 sts and 44 rnds = 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch in the round, blocked. To check it, knit a swatch in the round, block it, and measure a 4-inch section; if you have more stitches than 32, go up a needle size, and if you have fewer, go down.

Tips Before You Start

  • Work a gauge swatch in the round — many knitters purl more tightly than they knit, so a flat swatch can mislead you on sock fit.
  • Change colors at the beginning of a round, on the sole side of the sock, so the color joins stay hidden inside the shoe.
  • Keep the slipped edge stitches of the heel flap fairly loose so picking up the gusset stitches is easy and gap-free.
  • Try the sock on (or measure against a favorite pair) before starting the toe, since foot length is fully adjustable.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Cuff

With MC, CO 68 sts. Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches.

Rnds 1-12: [k1, p1] rep to end (68 sts).

Leg

Continue in the fisherman rib pattern (worked here as 1x1 ribbing) and change colors as directed.

Rnds 1-12: With MC, [k1, p1] rep to end (68 sts).

Rnds 13-24: Change to CC, [k1, p1] rep to end (68 sts).

Rnds 25-36: Change to MC, [k1, p1] rep to end (68 sts).

The leg now measures about 5 inches (12.5 cm) from the cast-on edge.

Heel

Slip 34 sts to waste yarn or a spare needle and hold for the instep. Work back and forth on the remaining 34 heel sts in stockinette.

Row 1 (RS): sl1, k33 (34 sts).

Row 2 (WS): sl1, p33 (34 sts).

Rows 3-20: Rep Rows 1-2 until the heel flap measures 2.5 inches (6.5 cm), ending with a WS row (34 sts).

Turn heel:

Row 1 (RS): sl1, k18, ssk, k1, turn (21 sts worked, 13 sts unworked).

Row 2 (WS): sl1, p9, p2tog, p1, turn (11 sts worked, 12 sts unworked).

Row 3 (RS): sl1, k to 1 st before gap, ssk, k1, turn.

Row 4 (WS): sl1, p to 1 st before gap, p2tog, p1, turn.

Rep Rows 3-4 until all sts are worked, ending with a RS row (20 sts remain).

Gusset

With MC, pick up and knit 18 sts along the heel flap, knit across the 34 held instep sts, then pick up and knit 18 sts along the other side of the heel flap (70 sts total).

Rnd 1: k to last 3 sts of sole, k2tog, k1, k34 instep, k1, ssk, k to end (68 sts).

Rnd 2: k all (68 sts).

Rep Rnds 1-2 until 68 sts remain (one repeat).

Foot

Work in stockinette stitch (knit every rnd) in MC until the foot measures 2 inches (5 cm) less than the desired total foot length.

Toe

Rnd 1: k to last 3 sts of sole, k2tog, k1, k1, ssk, k to last 3 sts of instep, k2tog, k1, k1, ssk, k to end (64 sts).

Rnd 2: k all (64 sts).

Rep Rnds 1-2 until 32 sts remain.

Graft the toe with Kitchener stitch.

Assembly and Finishing

Graft the toe closed with Kitchener stitch, then weave in all ends on the wrong side, gently stretching the fabric as you go so the joins lie flat. Seam nothing else — the sock is worked entirely in the round. Block the finished sock by soaking it in cool water, rolling it in a towel to remove excess water, and laying it flat to the finished measurements (8.5 inch foot circumference, 5 inch leg). Repeat all steps for the second sock.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Swap the silver band for any contrast color you love, or add a second narrow stripe for a bolder mid-century look.
  • For a longer crew sock, add extra MC rounds to the leg before the heel; for a shorter sneaker sock, work fewer.
  • Work the foot in CC for a contrast foot, or use a reinforced heel stitch (sl1, k1 across the heel flap) for extra durability.
