Seafoam Hexagon Loop: Free Crochet Cowl Pattern

Introduction

The Seafoam Hexagon Loop is a soft, reversible cowl made from twelve simple hexagon motifs in three shades of ocean blue. It's designed for teens and newer crocheters who want a project that looks impressive but only uses basic stitches — double crochet, chain, single crochet, and slip stitch. The hexagons sit side by side in a single strip that wraps around the neck, so the finished cowl is 21 inches (53 cm) around and 7 inches (18 cm) tall. It feels light and squishy against the skin, and because the motifs are joined with flat slip-stitch seams, it looks just as good worn inside out.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Worsted weight acrylic yarn, approximately 300 yards total — Color A (pale blue) 100 yards, Color B (medium blue) 100 yards, Color C (deep blue) 100 yards.
  • Hook: 5.0 mm (H-8) crochet hook.
  • Notions: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends, scissors, and a few stitch markers (optional, for holding motifs in order).
  • Finished size: Circumference 21 inches (53 cm), height 7 inches (18 cm).

Abbreviations

  • ch — chain: yarn over and pull through the loop on your hook.
  • sl st — slip stitch: insert hook, yarn over, pull through both the stitch and the loop on your hook.
  • sc — single crochet: insert hook, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through both loops.
  • dc — double crochet: yarn over, insert hook, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through the last two loops.
  • sp — space: the gap made by a chain (for example, a ch-2 sp).
  • rep — repeat.

Gauge

One finished hexagon motif measures 3.5 inches (9 cm) across, flat-to-flat, after blocking. Work one motif first and measure it; if it's larger, try a smaller hook, and if it's smaller, try a larger hook.

Tips Before You Start

  • Make all twelve motifs first, then lay them out in your alternating color order (A, B, C repeated four times) before joining anything — it's much easier to fix the sequence now than later.
  • Keep your tension relaxed on the ch-2 corner spaces; tight corners make the hexagons pucker and the seams harder to match.
  • Count your dc groups at the end of each round. Each motif should have exactly 6 groups of 3 dc in R1 and 6 groups of 7 dc in R2.
  • Leave tails of about 6 inches (15 cm) on each motif so you have plenty of yarn for weaving in securely.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Hexagon Motif (make 12: 4 each in A, B, C)

Set-up: With chosen color, ch 4, join with sl st to form ring.

R1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in ring, [ch 2, 3 dc in ring] 5 times, ch 2, join with sl st to top of ch-3 (6 groups of 3 dc, 6 ch-2 sps).

R2: Ch 3, dc in next 2 dc, *[2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in next ch-2 sp, dc in next 3 dc; rep from * around, join with sl st to top of ch-3 (6 groups of 7 dc, 6 ch-2 sps).

Finishing the motif: Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Assembly

Arrange the 12 motifs in a strip, alternating colors as desired (for example: A, B, C, A, B, C, A, B, C, A, B, C).

Joining: Join motifs with sl st through back loops only, matching stitches and ch-2 sps, to form a ring. Join the first motif to the last to close the ring.

Edging

Top edge, Round 1: With right side facing, join Color A with sl st in any ch-2 sp along the top edge, ch 1, sc in same sp, sc evenly around the entire top edge, join with sl st to first sc.

Bottom edge, Round 1: Repeat the same round along the bottom edge. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Blocking: Block lightly to measurements.

Assembly and Finishing

If you haven't already, seam the motifs together with slip stitch through back loops only, matching stitch for stitch and corner space for corner space, then join the first motif to the last to close the ring. Weave in every tail on the wrong side, working each end back and forth through a few stitches so it won't work loose with wear. Block the cowl lightly to 21 inches (53 cm) around and 7 inches (18 cm) tall: mist it with water, pat it into shape flat, and let it dry completely before wearing.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Color play: Swap the order to A, A, B, B, C, C for a gradient look, or use a single color for a more subtle, textured cowl.
  • Make it taller: Add a second row of hexagons (24 motifs total) for a deeper, drapier cowl — just add about 300 more yards of yarn.
  • Edging upgrade: Replace the plain sc edging with a round of sc, ch 1, skip 1 stitch for a slightly scalloped, decorative finish.
